History Animated
If a picture is worth a thousand words, a good animation is worth ten thousand. After reading book after book about the Pacific War and finding only complicated maps with dotted lines and dashed lines crisscrossing the pages, we decided to depict the key naval and land battles using animation technology.
USA Weekend Magazine "Get the children excited. Let them start exploring the Civil War sites before you even hit the road. Check out civilwaranimated.com to preview the battlefields, hear a narration and meet the generals."
School Library Journal "If, like me, you have a few students and teachers who fancy themselves fill-in-the-blank war buffs, if the Civil War, World War II, and the Revolutionary War are part of your curriculum, you’re going to want to share HistoryAnimated. The site brings to life those dashed and dotted line maps to depict key naval and land battles using graphics, text, sound, and animations. So much more effective and so much more scalable than those static pull-down shade maps! Not every battle is included, but the folks at HistoryAnimated appear to be adding battles on a regular basis."
From LTC(Ret) Brian Maijala"The Civil War Animated CD is an exceptional learning tool for my students. It provides the key leadership, event, time, and location context which are imperitive during the Preliminary Study Phase of the Chattanooga Staff Ride. The combined graphics, text and audio truly helps engage all of my students in the classroom."
From Free Technology for Teachers blog: "One of my favorite US History resources.....my students absolutely loved the animations complete with their sound effects and marching visuals.'"
From Todd Bryda, Professor of History at Northwestern Connecticut Community College “In the constant battle to keep students interested in the past, History Animated gives teachers a precious resource to fight for the attention of the video game generation. The maps are visually appealing and represent solid scholarship. What separates the operators of this site from others isn’t just that they provide a quality product, but they are also open to suggestions, i.e. a compact disk without text for classroom use. Well done James!”
From a recent issue of WWII Magazine "the site provides a bird's eye view of Japanese and American military units as they hopscotch around the great chessboard of the Pacific"
From the Free Technology for Teachers Blog: "History Animated is a fantastic resource for teachers of US History. The animations will make great supplements to classroom instruction. The animations are a significant improvement over drawing or pointing to places on a map.l"
From the Teaching the Civil War with Technology Blog: "These animations can be used in many ways from providing students with something different than just reading about a battle to using them as discussion starters on why a battle happened the way it did. I also like how the authors provided bibliographic information with each of the battles where you can obtain additional information."
