The fortress city of Vicksburg keeps the Mississippi River from complete Union control. General Sherman's key objective in the West is to take the city Vicksburg and cut the Confederacy in two. Facing Grant is hundreds of miles of impenetrable bayous, a formidable army, and Confederate raiders including Earl Van Dorn and Nathan Bedford Forrest. |
