After defeating McClellan's invasion army on the Peninsula, Robert E. Lee decides to attack and destroy Union General Pope's army guarding the approaches to Washington. Both armies begin manuevering. Pope is trying to delay until McClellan's huge army from the Peninsula arrives to reinforce him. Lee wants the opportunity to engage and destroy Pope before McClellan's army can arrive.
