Introduction

Chancellorsville

"Fighting Joe" Hooker

The Battle of Chancellorsville was arguably General Lee's greatest victory. Outnumbered by more than two to one by a reenergized union army under "Fighting Joe" Hooker, Lee uses daring maneuvers to defeat the union army. Against all traditional strategy, Lee divides his army again and again -attacking one wing of Hooker's army at one point with equal forces while holding Hooker's other wing with a skeleton force. Hooker's plan, while brilliant, is implemented poorly and he suffers from disrupted communications and poor command decisions by his subordinates during the battle. While Lee is victorious, his best general, Stonewall Jackson, is mortally wounded during the battle.
